# Spaces and channels

> How Gobi organizes what you share with a team, and the channels inside it.

A space is where a team builds shared context. Your captures land in your [Home](/privacy/your-captures); a note reaches a space when you share it there.

Create a space when you want a place shared with other people. The app puts it plainly on the create screen: *a new space for building intelligence for your project or team.*

## Home and spaces

|          | Home                      | Space                                                     |
| -------- | ------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------- |
| Members | You | The people you invite |
| Capture | Where every capture lands | Not possible |
| Contains | Your notes, your devices | What people share into it, and the conversation around it |

<Note>
  You cannot start a capture inside a space. Capture happens in Home, always, and sharing is the separate step. See [where your captures go](/privacy/your-captures).

## Channels

Channels organize conversation inside a space, the way they do in a team chat tool. Every space starts with a `Welcome to Gobi` channel. Post updates, share notes into a channel, and reply in threads.

Channels are **public** or **private**, and you choose which when you create one.

|                 | Public                                                  | Private                       |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------- |
| Joining | Anyone in the space can browse it and join in one click | Invitation only |
| The space agent | Reads it as part of the space's context | Does not take it into context |

A channel header shows which it is, next to the member count: `Public · 4 members`. In the channel list, a lock marks the private ones.

</Frame>

## Channel members and settings

Both live inside the channel, under its `...` menu.

* **Members.** See who's in, add people by name or email, and remove them.
* **Settings.** `Channel setup` for the name and details, `Notifications` for what reaches you.
* **Danger zone.** `Delete channel` removes it permanently along with everything in it. `Leave channel` takes you out, and you lose access to it.

## Channels and the space agent

The [space agent](/introduction/glossary#space-agent) reads the public channels of the space and answers from them anywhere in it. A private channel stays out of that entirely.

You can still bring the agent into a private channel by tagging it in a thread. It reads only as much of that thread as the answer needs, and retains nothing. More on what the agent knows in [Ask Gobi](/ask-gobi).

## Inviting people

Invite from the space's member settings: copy an invite link and send it anywhere, or add people by email.

## Roles

**Admins** manage the space and its members. **Members** post and share. Admins can promote or demote from member settings, with one guard: the last admin in a space can't demote themselves.

## Switching spaces

Tap the name at the top to open the **left panel**. Home sits above the list of your spaces, and `Add a space` is at the bottom of it.
