# Direct messages

> The smallest rooms in the space.

Below a space's channels sit its **direct messages** —
conversations with one member, or a handful. Same space,
smallest possible rooms: for the question that doesn't need an
audience, the heads-up before the meeting, the side conversation
that always happens next to shared work.

## Between the people in them

A direct message belongs to the people in it — full stop. It
isn't a channel and doesn't behave like one:

* **It's not part of the space's memory.** What you say in a DM
  stays out of what the [space agent](/spaces/space-agent) knows
  and answers from. The agent remembers the space's rooms, not
  its hallway conversations — and that's true for a group DM
  just as for two people.
* **It's scoped to the space.** Your DMs live inside the space
  you share with those people — the conversation and its
  context stay where the working relationship is.

## The one special neighbor

One row in your direct messages isn't a person: the space agent
lives there too. That's where you
[ask it anything](/spaces/space-agent) the space knows — a DM
with the agent is private to you in the reading, but the agent
answers only from what the space has shared, so asking it never
exposes anything of yours and never shows you anything you
couldn't already open.
