# Speakers

> How Gobi separates and labels the voices in a conversation.

Gobi separates the voices in a capture automatically. In the transcript, **each voice gets its own line**, so you can follow who said what.

## Unnamed speakers

A voice Gobi can't match to anyone appears as `Speaker 1`, `Speaker 2`, and so on. **The separation still works**; the voice just doesn't have a name yet.

Every unnamed voice also shows up at the top of your [directory](/directory/overview), under **New**, with how many notes it has been heard in.

The states that show up there:

* **New voiceprint · Processing.** Gobi is still working on the voice.
* **Unique voiceprint · N links found.** A voice Gobi is confident belongs to one person, with no idea who. What `N links` counts is an [open question](/directory/profiles).
* **Maybe: \[Name] · N links found.** Gobi has a guess. Confirm it or correct it.

## Assigning a speaker

Tap a voiceprint to see **every note it appears in**, then give it a person.

* **Add to existing directory.** Link the voice to someone already in your directory.
* **Create new directory.** Make the person on the spot, then link the voice to them.

Either way, **all the linked notes update at once**, and that person's conversations start collecting in one place.

**Delete voiceprint** removes the voice signature. The notes stay.

  Voice matching improves as more conversations link to a person, and it can be wrong, especially early on. A `Maybe:` label is a guess, so check it before you accept it.
